Would like to get rid of the noise of the city and visit the most beautiful places around Budapest? You won’t get bored, we promise. The charming little town of Szentendre, the historic fortress of Visegrád, the panorama of Esztergom or the Grassalkovich Castle in Gödöllő are fascinating day trip programs in the close area of Budapest. Find out below what you don’t want to miss if you visit these amazing towns.
Szentendre is one of the most popular riverside destinations along River Danube in Hungary. Its romantic town centre is full with exciting places such as bars and restaurants, museums, small manufactures and orthodox catholic churches. After you explored this charming little town, a beer and a Lángos will refresh you at the river bank. Szentendre is easily accessible by bike along the Eurovelo 6 bike route, but you can get there by boat on River Danube as well. Places we recommend to visit in Szentendre:
If you continue towards north along River Danube, you shortly reach the castle town of Visegrád. The medieval castle is perfectly placed in the scenic landscape of the Danube Bend. It’s a place where history and nature meet as an amazing combination. Beyond the upper castle you can visit the Salamon Tower and the Royal Palace of King Matthias as well. If you get hungry, we recommend to bike into the woods and try boar goulash at the famous Ördögmalom Restaurant. From Szentendre you can get there by bike either along the Danube bank or through the hilly forests of the Visegrád mountains.
Esztergom is the centre of the Roman Catholic Church in Hungary. It’s in one day biking distance (80 kms or 50 miles) from Budapest, but you can get there by train as well. You will find here the largest church of Hungary, the so called Primatial Basilica of the Blessed Virgin Mary Assumed Into Heaven and St Adalbert. Currently it’s the tallest building in Hungary. From the viewpoint next to the church you can see Slovakia at the other side of the river. You can even walk there via the bridge between Esztergom and Párkány. In case you would like to eat tasty Hungarian dish, we recommend Csülök Csárda for you.
Gödöllő is a university town 20 kilometers east from Budapest and you can get there by train from the centre of Budapest. If you are interested in the history of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, a visit to the Grassalkovich Palace in Gödöllő might be a perfect day trip for you. The palace was the summer residence of Franz Josef, Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary and his wife Elisabeth or Sisi. Although Gödöllő is quite close to Budapest, we recommend to go there by bike only if you have experience with road biking, since you won’t find segregated bike path between the border of Budapest and Gödöllő.
